1. Truth and Reconciliation Commission Calls to Action Curriculum Updates

Phase 1: Subjects/Courses Updated

· Social Studies 4-6, History 7-8

· Canadian and World Studies 9-10 (History)

Current Status:

· April 20, 2018 - released to sector

· September 2018 - mandatory implementation (This will impact assessment and evaluation)

· Fall 2018 - release resources to support implementation, developed by Indigenous individuals and organizations

Phase 2: Subjects/Courses to be updated (Writing process begins July 2018)

Grade 12:The Environment and Resource Management, CGR4M

Grade 12: Canada: History, Identity and Culture, CHI4U

Grade 11: Understanding Canadian Law, CLU3M

Grade 12: Families in Canada, HHS4U and HHS4C

Grade 11: Introduction to Anthropology, Psychology and Sociology, HSP3U and HSP3C

o Some topics for revision will include:

§ the history and legacy of residential schools

§ treaties

§ the Indian Act and its lasting impact

§ First Nations, Métis and Inuit contemporary realities

§ Canadian and international law, legislation, and policies that directly impact First Nations, Métis, and Inuit individuals, communities, and nations

§ resource management and duty to consult

§ the impact of colonialism

2. First Nation, Metis and Inuit Studies

· April 6, 2018 - five draft courses released to sector

· August 2018 - final revised First Nations, Métis, and Inuit Studies curriculum policy document will be released, including all ten courses, front

matter, glossary, and course openers for each course in order to provide educators with the Indigenous cultural context required for

implementation in both English and French.

· 2018-19 school year - soft implementation to support delivery of the revised curriculum

· Fall 2018 - regional implementation sessions

· 2019-20 - mandatory implementation
